Believe Women

Marissa Southards

2018 JUST got here.  I mean, literally just arrived a mere eight days ago.  There is already so much to talk about.

In the words of Ms. Oprah Winfrey:

"...what I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I'm especially proud and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories. Each of us in this room are celebrated because of the stories that we tell, and this year we became the story."

I think I can say with near certainty that nearly all of us can stand tall in our truth and speak the words "ME TOO".  It is yet one of the commonalities that we share of women, girls, and woman identifying.  Does it make okay?  Absolutely fucking not.

I am in near tears that we have made it to 2018, and it took silent protests, an awards show speech, multiple women (and some men) speaking their truth (and being questioned on their truth) about the assaults and damage done to them to actually bring this conversation to the table.  Some of them were doubted.  Some were questioned.  All were judged in the court of public opinion.  A word of advice?

BELIEVE WOMEN.

I promise you that we can have a conversation about this.  I promise you we will tell you all about the truth of womanhood. I swear upon my children that there is a direction to go from here.

But we can't get there until women are believed.  Women must be believed and not vilified.  Women must be believed and not black listed.  Women must be believed and the accused held accountable.

BELIEVE WOMEN.

This behavior against women, and women identifying has to end.  The days of "boys being boys" are over.  The days of excusing your favorite actor's behavior away and negating an accuser's story are behind us.

BELIEVE WOMEN.

As Ms. Winfrey stated in her empowering speech at the Golden Globes 2018, "For too long, women have not been heard or believed if they dare speak the truth to the power of those men. But their time is up. Their time is up."

Women - speak truth to power.  Stand firm in your truth.  You are real, you are powerful, and you are fucking magical.

To those men - yes indeed....your time is up.
